Nut Fudge Day + Día de Dulce de Leche con Nueces [Eng+Spa]

This Sunday ends, May 12. I have been busy on the computer and I really spent my time responding to other things and there is almost no log post for the day. Today a fairly widespread and well-known holiday was celebrated, which was Mother's Day.

Since there would surely already be quite a few publications about this Anniversary, I preferred to comment on another one, which is also celebrated today, and which is on the topic of #food and its #History. Today is: Nut Fudge Day.

If you are surprised by the party, let me tell you that I was surprised too. I didn't know of its existence. Upon checking a little, I noticed that it was a National Day (in another country), but that it has not been internationalized yet.

That made me doubt taking up this celebration, but I love food, so I took up the topic.

The #caramel of milk I'm talking about, #Fudge, is a type of milk candy that became very popular in the United States in the 19th century, and it seems to have been derived from British candy. It has always caught my attention that bad jokes are made about the cuisine of the British Empire, but I think that (at least in #sweet things) they have very interesting and good recipes.

Let's return to today's matter. Fudge had become popular centuries ago due to its easy preparation, its relatively low cost, associated with the reduction in the cost of sugar due to its increased production in the American Antilles. And it used to be a type of sweet that could be found in places where people pass by or have high traffic.

This #candy could be accompanied by different additions that gave it different flavors, although I have read that there was a preference for adding nuts, whether walnuts, hazelnuts, or similar things.

In references to the origin of the holiday, I found that it seems to have to do with the increase in Women's Colleges in the United States in the 19th century. In particular, a letter from Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge, a student at Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, is noted. The letter was about her cousin from Baltimore and how she had made and sold a dulce de leche for 40 cents a pound. Hartridge obtained the recipe and, in 1888, she prepared 30 pounds (13.61 kilogram) of this candy for the Vassar College student auction.

For some reason unknown to me, the action found good reception and a wave of followers in different women's universities, as part of festival activities or fundraising activities. It is surprising how an action that seems so simple can have started a celebration that continues to exist in our 21st century.

Well, that would be all about this topic. I guess I'll have to look up the recipe and see if it's actually as easy to prepare as the record said (personal smile). Although that's more of an excuse to eat some candy. I say goodbye now, wishing you that you are well and that we can read again another time.

Este domingo termina, 12 de mayo. He estado ocupado en la computadora y de verdad que se me pasó el tiempo respondiendo a otras cosas y casi no hay el post del registro del día. Hoy se celebraba una fiesta bastante extendida y conocida, qué era el Día de la Madre.

Siendo que de seguro habría ya bastantes publicaciones de esta Efemérides, prefería comentar sobre otra, que también se celebra hoy, y que está en el tema de la #comida y su #Historia. Hoy es el Día del Fudge de Nueces, o dicho en un mejor español: Día del Dulce de Leche con Nueces.

Si te sorprende la fiesta, déjame decirte que yo también me sorprendí. No sabía de su existencia. Al revisar un poco, noté que se trataba de un Día Nacional (en otro país), pero que no se ha internacionalizado aún.

Eso me hacía dudar de tomar esta celebración, pero me encanta la comida, así que tomé el tema.

El dulce de leche del que hablo, el #Fudge, es un tipo de caramelo con leche que se volvió muy popular en Estados Unidos en el Siglo XIX, y parece que fue una derivación de la dulcería británica. Siempre me ha llamado la atención que se hagan malas bromas sobre la cocina del Imperio británico, pero creo que (por lo menos en cosas #dulces) tienen recetas muy interesantes y buenas.

Regresemos al asunto de hoy. El Fudge se había vuelto popular hace siglos por su fácil preparación, su costo relativamente bajo, asociado a la reducción del costo del azúcar por su incremento de producción en las Antillas de América. Y solía ser un tipo de dulce que se podría encontrar en sitios de paso o de alto tránsito de gente.

Este #caramelo se podía acompañar de distintos aditamentos que le daban sabores distintos, aunque he leído que se tenía preferencia por agregarle frutos secos, ya fueran nueces, avellanas, o cosas similares.

En las referencias del origen del día de fiesta, me encontré con que parece tener que ver con el incremento de las Universidades para Mujeres en Estados Unidos en el siglo XIX. En especial se señala una carta de Emelyn Bettersby Hartridge, una estudiante del Vassar College de Poughkeepsie (Nueva York). La carta era sobre su primo de Baltimore y el cómo había elaborado y vendido un dulce de leche a 40 centavos la libra. Hartridge obtuvo la receta y, en 1888, preparó 30 libras de dulce de leche para la subasta de estudiantes del Vassar College.

Por alguna razón que desconozco, la acción encontró buena acogida y una ola de seguidoras en distintas universidades femeninas, como parte de las actividades de festivales o actividades de recaudación de fondos. Sorprende como una acción que parece tan simple puede haber iniciado una celebración que sigue existiendo en nuestro siglo XXI.

Bien, eso sería todo acerca de este tema. Supongo que me tocará buscar la receta y ver si en realidad es tan fácil de preparar como decía el registro (sonrisa personal).
