Bots that try to keep the unstable stable: HBD Stabilizer vs Terra 🌔 [Eng+Spa] Bots que intentan mantener estable lo inestable: HBD Stabilizer vs Terra 🔄⚖️
(Versión en español más abajo).
This post came about thanks to a question my friend @aljif7 left in the comments of my previous post about Hive. Basically, he was asking about the HBD stabilizer bot and if it was similar to Terra's. Good question, because the truth is that both systems are quite different, although they try to achieve the same thing: to keep a stablecoin always worth close to one dollar.
So I started researching, asking questions, and reading, and here's what I found, in a summarized version without too much technical jargon.
(Data revised on July 29, 2026.)
The same old idea: maintain 1 token = 1 dollar 💵
A stablecoin is a cryptocurrency that aims to always be worth the same as one dollar (or one euro, etc.). It sounds simple, but maintaining something "stable" in the crazy world of crypto is quite a challenge. There are several ways to achieve this: some are backed by real dollars in a bank, others use algorithms, and others use a mix of methods.
Hive and Terra each tried their own approach. Let's see how they fared.
Hive's HBD Stabilizer: The Bot That Buys and Sells. 🐝
HBD is Hive's #stablecoin. It's not backed by dollars in a bank but by the HIVE token. The blockchain allows you to convert HBD to HIVE for the equivalent of one dollar, but the conversion takes 3.5 days. And since nobody wants to wait 3.5 days to sell, there's the HBD Stabilizer.
The Stabilizer is a bot funded by the #Hive community fund (the DHF) that operates in the internal market, buying HBD when it's cheap and selling it when it's expensive. This helps keep the price close to the dollar without people having to wait 3.5 days.
The good news: In its four years of operation, it generated approximately 4.7 million #HBD in profit for the community fund and removed 26 million HBD from circulation. In other words, it was profitable and useful.
The downside: Its operation is also tied to the influx of approximately 57 million HIVE tokens into circulation, because when it buys HBD, it's selling HIVE. More tokens in circulation equals more downward pressure on the price. And since February 2026, when the system's debt exceeded 20%, the bot has ceased operations. Furthermore, it has faced periods without funding.

Terra's Mechanism: No Brakes and Full Speed Ahead. 🌔
#Terra worked differently. It had two tokens: UST (the stablecoin) and LUNA (the token that cushioned the blows). The idea was that you could always exchange 1 UST for 1 dollar worth of LUNA, and vice versa, instantly.
It sounded good in theory, but it had a huge problem: it was a vicious cycle.
The Death Spiral of TERRA/UST/LUNA
If confidence in UST wavered, people redeemed #UST for LUNA. Each redemption created new LUNA out of thin air, which drove down the price of LUNA. Cheaper LUNA meant less ability to withstand the pressure. That generated more panic, more redemptions, more #LUNA created... And so the cycle spirals into disaster.
And that's exactly what happened in May 2022. In one week, UST went from $1 to $0.20 and LUNA from $87 to practically zero. The Luna Foundation Guard (LFG) held approximately 80,000 Bitcoin (around $3 billion) in reserve and spent almost all of it trying to defend the peg. It failed.
A table comparing the two stabilizers. ⚖️
Feature | HBD Stabilizer (Hive) | Terra/UST |
|---|---|---|
Conversion Speed | 3.5 days | Instant |
Mechanism Type | Buy/Sell Bot + On-Chain Conversion | Burn/Mint Algorithm + BTC Reserves |
External Reserves | No (only DHF funds) | Yes, ~80,000 BTC (~$3 billion) lost! |
Security Limits | Debt rules that restrict issuance | No effective restrictions |
Outcome | System under stress but operational. 😰 | Total collapse 😭 |
The key difference is that Hive has "brakes": conversion takes 3.5 days (which cools down panic), and there are rules that stop HBD creation when debt gets too high. Terra had no brakes: everything was instantaneous and without effective limits.
Was Terra's mechanism negative? 🔍
Yes, in practical terms it was negative. But to be fair: it wasn't that they had a "bad bot." It was a vulnerable architecture. The circular design of the system, the instantaneous speed of conversions, the absence of effective debt limits, and the extreme dependence on the Anchor Protocol (which offered a 20% yield and attracted 75% of all UST) made collapse almost inevitable when trust broke down.
Hive's HBD Stabilizer, on the other hand, has had real positive effects: it has been profitable, has maintained the peg for years, and has safety mechanisms. But it's not perfect either: its limitations become apparent when there's low liquidity, high debt, or the price of HIVE plummets, as is happening right now.
The lesson I'm taking away. 🏠
Speed kills, or at least it can lead to a lethal increase in risk. Terra allowed instant conversions, and the panic translated into immediate and massive actions. Hive has a 3.5-day waiting period, which gives emotions time to cool down. It's like the difference between having disc brakes and driving without brakes.
But even the best brakes aren't infallible. If trust is completely lost, no technical mechanism is sufficient on its own. In crypto, as in many things in life, trust is the true backbone.
See you in the next post. And as always: in crypto, caution is never a bad idea. 😉

No pudo hacerlo.
