Petting A Wild Chipmunk - Video
As awesome as it is to be friends with so many of the wild animals in my yard, I sometimes miss the level of affection that one gets from a loyal, loving pet. Having so many cute critters within arm's length has often made me want to pet them.
Chipmunks, rabbits, and squirrels have all taken food directly from my hand. So far this summer, a chickadee has landed in my hand on five occasions to take some food. But none of them have ever let me pet them.
Not for my lack of trying, though. I've tested different animals over the years with the same results. They are fine with my hand being close to them as long as it is in front of their face. Once my hand moves behind their head they get nervous and start to flinch away.
Well, about three weeks ago I decided to test out this chipmunk who visits me every day. It would often turn it's back towards me while gathering up some nuts. Each time it came up to me, I would bring my hand a little bit closer to its back.
No matter how close my hand was, it didn't seem to care. Finally, my finger tip brushed against its fur. Once again, it didn't react. So, I did it again before it hopped away with a mouthful of nuts.
Since then, I've pet the little cutie a lot. I think it's even starting to enjoy it. I hope you enjoy the quick video below.
