Picture a day - Mammoth replica
In 1996, the bones of a well-preserved mammoth fossil were excavated nearby in a clay pit. The photo shows a replica of the fossil located in the yard of the national museum, while the original bones are located inside the museum. A detailed investigation established that the mammoth was a female over 4 meters tall and about 7 meters long, with tusks over 3 meters long. The fossil was found at a depth of 20 meters, and due to the composition of the rocks (clay), as much as 90 percent of the bone mass was preserved over a period of 500,000 years.
