My cleaning exercise today 9th May 2025

Hello everyone! I want to write on folklore. I remember when I was a child my auntie will gather us all and she will keep us busy as she narrates different stories just to entertain us. But one may ask, What is Folklore? What are there types? And its cultural significance.

Folklore refers to traditional stories, customs, and beliefs passed down through generations by word of mouth. Folktales, fairy tales, myths, and legends are all part of folklore, reflecting the culture, values, and history of a particular group of people.

TYPES OF FOLKLORE:

1. FAIRY TALES: Stories featuring magical creatures, like talking animals, witches, and giants, often teaching moral lessons. Examples include Grimm's Fairy Tales and Hans Christian Andersen's stories.
2. FOLKTALES: Stories passed down through oral tradition, reflecting everyday life, struggles, and triumphs. Examples include trickster tales and animal tales.
3. MYTHS: Stories explaining natural phenomena or the origins of the world, often featuring gods and goddesses.
4. LEGENDS: Stories about historical figures or events, often exaggerated or supernatural.

CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

I. Folklore provides insights into the culture, values, and history of a particular group of people.
Ii. It helps to preserve traditional stories, customs, and beliefs.
III. Folklore can be used to teach moral lessons, entertain, and inspire.

EXAMPLES OF FOLKTALES FROM AROUND THE WORLD:

• African: "How Frog Went to Heaven" (Angolan folktale) and "Master Man" (Nigerian tall tale)
• Asian: "The Magic Brocade" (Chinese folktale) and "The Princess and the God" (Indian myth)
• European: "Quackling" (French folktale) and "The Lady of Stavoren" (Dutch legend)
• South American: "The Wings of the Butterfly" (Amazonian folktale)
