A combination of both brings about a balance.
Hello, everyone.
I welcome you to my blog and another wonderful edition of the Hive Learners' featured post. Trust me when I say raising kids is one of the most difficult tasks or responsibilities that can be put on anyone's shoulders because it is not a responsibility you take care of for two days or one; you cannot decide when you want to take care of it. It is a responsibility that does not give you any choice; there is no in-between. It is either you are good at it or you are not; you can either be a good parent or a bad parent. When it comes to parenthood and child-raising, there is no in-between. You are either giving it your best or you are not giving enough.
As much as raising kids can be difficult, we need to devise ways and means to help us do it in the best possible way that we can and to help us achieve our goals, which is raising kids that will follow and stay on the right path. They might be kids or children, but that does not stop them from being human. Every human being with understanding knows that whenever they do something wrong, they ought to be punished, and they won't feel offended or pick offense that they were punished for being involved in the wrong things; rather, they take correction and find their way back to the right path and try not to be involved or part of what brought about them getting punished.
At the same time, when we do good as humans and don't get any rewards or compliments for doing so, it brings about a kind of feeling, and sometimes you find yourself wishing you just did the opposite of good and not the actual good done. We don't do good because we want to be rewarded or complimented for doing it, but I feel getting complimented after doing good causes us to want to do more and better. The same way getting punished after doing bad or wrong makes us not want to be involved in those things anymore. So you see that getting punished deters us from doing those things again, as no one wants to be punished or loves to be punished, and in the same way, everyone loves the compliments and rewards they get when they do good and therefore go ahead to do even more good so they can get those compliments again.
It is not any different in kids and children; punish them when they are wrong and reward them in the best possible way whenever they do good or do well, and watch them make the right choices. They know the choices to make, as they know the ones that will lead to them getting rewarded and those that will lead to them getting punished; therefore, a combination of both reward and punishment when raising kids will bring about a balance. Don't just punish kids when they do wrong; also reward them when they do good.
Many parents, especially African parents are good at punishing children at every given opportunity but never seen it fit or right to read them when they eventually do right. Many parents are quick to punish but slow to reward even children will have questions like why no reward for doing good but always punishment for doing bad running through their minds.
