Stablecoins are no longer fighting to become the biggest. They're fighting to become the most useful. 🧡
Stablecoins are no longer fighting to become the biggest.
They're fighting to become the most useful. 🧡
Yesterday, Circle lost around 16% in a single day.
Not because USDC broke.
Not because users suddenly abandoned it.
But because something much bigger happened.
A new consortium called OpenUSD was announced, backed by names like Coinbase, Stripe, Visa, Mastercard and BlackRock, alongside more than 140 partners.
The idea? Simple.
Instead of keeping the yield generated by the stablecoin's reserves... Share it with the ecosystem.
At first glance, this looks like a battle between stablecoins. It isn't. It's a battle between business models.
For years, the value was thought to be in issuing the stablecoin.
Today, the market is starting to ask a different question: What if the real value lies in distribution?
Who integrates it?
Who accepts it?
Who builds applications around it?
Who makes it useful every single day?
Let's be honest... Nobody downloads a payment app because they love its treasury management strategy.
People use it because it solves a problem.
This is exactly why building a stablecoin may end up being the easy part. Building a network is much harder.
History is full of technically brilliant products that never reached critical mass.
Meanwhile, simpler solutions with stronger ecosystems conquered entire industries.
The internet wasn't won by the best protocol.
Social media wasn't won by the best code.
Payments won't necessarily be won by the best stablecoin either.
They'll be won by whoever creates the strongest network effects.
And that's why this announcement matters.
Not because OpenUSD has already won. Far from it.
Consortiums are notoriously difficult to coordinate.
Incentives change.
Partners disagree.
Strategies evolve.
The hard part starts now.
But one thing is becoming increasingly clear. The stablecoin race is no longer about creating digital dollars.
It's about building the infrastructure around them.
Because in the end... Money has never been the product.
The network has. 🧡 !
