The media is all in a tizzy about the inability of Kevin McCarthy to get a majority, saying it represents a failure of democracy. Well, no. It faithfully represents the pattern of opinions and convictions in the country as a whole.

Bemoaning the difficulty that the House will have in governing given the concessions he will make. Well, no. Government that governs least governs best. It needs to be hard to impose government on the people. Lets hope for and welcome gridlock as the opposing crony groups cancel each other out.

But beware the pen of the doddering chief executive.
