The Safekeeper, a novel that mixes history, eroticism, and love between women in post-war Holland./ La guardiana, una novela que mezcla historia, erotismo y amor entre mujeres en la Holanda de la posguerra.
First of all, you tell me I absolutely loved this book, The Safekeeper by Yael Van Der Wouden, a true gem, a novel that blends history, eroticism, coming-of-age, love, and nostalgia. Let me tell you a little about it: Holland has just emerged from the Second World War, a new world is being born, people are coming out, wanting to live, but there are some who have been dispossessed of their homes, their lives, and are struggling to re-emerge.
And it is precisely a house, large and empty, with small valuables, where Isabel lives, a single, austere woman who has lost the mother she loved so much and who keeps her belongings scattered around the house like relics and treasures. Isabel, however, hangs out with her brothers: Hendrik, openly gay, or rather more or less openly so, who shares his apartment with a man and is unbothered by his sister's disapproval of this relationship; and Louis, an undaunted womanizer and traveler who always shows up with a new woman.
And that's what happens when they meet for a family dinner. Louis brings Eva, yet another girl, with a slightly naive air, badly dyed, almost stringy blonde hair, a not-so-intelligent air, and a jaunty disposition. Isabel can't stand her from first glance and is very rude and stinging toward her, insufferable from her presence, and does everything she can to embarrass and humiliate her during dinner. Eva, however, isn't intimidated by this strange, somewhat snobbish family; on the contrary, she's enthusiastic about getting to know them better and isn't affected by their hostile ways. She's enchanted by the house where Isabel lives, an almost sacred place treated like a temple, so much so that when Louis leaves for one of his trips, he decides to move there, much to Isabel's disappointment, as she's not used to having people in the house except the maid, whom she constantly bullies.

Thus begins a forced and unpleasant cohabitation. Eva appears always kind and friendly, almost too comfortable, occupying Isabel's mother's room, using her things, eating from their plates, cooking in their kitchen, and Isabel can't stand her at all. Furthermore, small objects—spoons, cups—start disappearing. Isabel obsessively counts everything and suspects Eva of being the overly intrusive stranger living in their house. Isabel's loneliness has become a void, a habit, and despite their differences, Eva seems to fill that void little by little, like water filling a well until it perhaps drowns.
After the initial resentment, a physical bond begins to develop between the two, an attention as powerful as a tsunami; hands, bodies, smells, liquids—they mix and create a dependency for both of them. An overwhelming eroticism shocks and overwhelms them, and then... And I can't give away any spoilers, of course, but it's a masterfully written book. Every character and situation unfolds naturally. It's a book that kept me awake on these hot nights, leaving me with a sort of languor. Yes, languid and delightful is how I would describe this book. I definitely give it a ten out of ten, and I highly recommend it! It was a truly pleasant discovery and reading experience!

Además, pequeños objetos —cucharas, tazas— empiezan a desaparecer.
