An Undiscovered Hidden Gem - Pembroke Bay

Unexpected Natural Jackpot

Can you imagine, this was the view that met us unexpectedly as we were adventuring to another location?

Having been to the beautiful island of Tobago, part of the twin-island republic of Trinidad and Tobago, my beautiful country; my family and I have visited our sister isle every summer vacation since before my birth. It has been a sweet, comforting routine and escape from the hustle and bustle of regular life. One I avidly look forward to every year.

On this trip, we actually had decided to visit Argyle Waterfall for the first time, the most popular tourist waterfall on the island. The drive from our hotel was quite long and as we journeyed through the winding, Windward Road, however as we continued on the journey, singing and chenet hunting (a type of fruit), for my dad, we stumbled across this sign that immediately caught our attention.

With the thirst for new adventures beating in our chests, we immediately diverted from the main road into what looked like a semi-paved asphalt road called Pembroke Bay Road.

Excited to see a new beach we never heard of, we continued down the road that was less travelled. On either side there was lush, green vegetation. The road continued to narrow, as we headed closer and closer to the coastline.

As we neared the opening to the beach, some local goats were grazing nearby which was a pleasant surprise. They seemed so jovial and friendly and added a rich charm to the landscape. It was also very reassuring to know that the islanders felt safe enough to leave their livestock unsupervised.

As we turned into the beach mouth this was the first view of Pembroke Bay from the car. Upon first appearances it seemed very lackluster. A weathered coastal embankment protecting the beach from erosion and coastal flooding was the first thing that caught our attention.

However, upon jumping out of the car, the view was magnificent. The sun was blazing down on us at the almost midday hour, exacerbating the brilliant hues of blues that coloured the bay. The white foamy waves kissed the shore ever so passionately and the forest green vegetation on the surrounding structures just made the entire panoramic view absolutely breathtaking.

As we stood on the embankment, the tide was quickly coming in and the foamy white waves tried to kiss us also. It felt like the bay itself was issuing a personal welcome to its unprecedented shores. The pictures we grabbed felt right out of a painting as the whites splattered across the scene.

The cool water sprinkled and splashed intermittently as it ebbed and flowed drawing nearer and nearer in intensity as the tide came in even more.

While we were there we spotted some of the locals bathing or as we like to say in our local parlance "taking a dip" in the refreshing waters to cool down from the blazing heat.

It was also encouraging to know that the beach was bathing-friendly, as many other beaches along the coastline have dangerous rip-tide currents and have been rendered unsuitable for bathing. This meant that we could add this beach to our regular beach runs. Woohoo! This couple spent awhile just lavishing in the revitalizing Atlantic Ocean waters which made up the bay.

We were also able to luckily capture some of the intricate coastal formations around the bay such as several sea stacks and sea stumps as you can see from the drone shots.

As we flew out a bit further we could also see coastal headlands that formed due to severe erosion, with several cliffs, coves and sea arches along the bay.

This overhead view definitely had me reminiscing on geography class, as we could clearly idenitfy the estuary and the baymouth spit being formed. It was incredible to see class coming to life so evidently. (PS - Feel free to correct me if I am wrong, it's been awhile.)

You may be wondering if we decided to test out the waters, unfortunately we did not this time, but what a brilliant, hidden discovery on this little island. We would definitely recommend checking out Pembroke Bay in Tobago, for a bath or just a drive to enjoy nature at its finest. It would definitely tickle the geologists and geography enthusiasts out there.

As the drone flew higher, this gorgeous shot we were able to grab, which painted the perfect picture, the clouds contrasting against the sky like stretched cotton candy, the ripples on the blue-green water bordered by foamy etching and the quaint houses and trees that enhanced the visual appeal.

Just can't get over this mesmerizing view! Hope you enjoyed it as much as I did. 😊
