Why You Keep Going Back to the Same Person (Even When It Hurts)

Sometimes, the hardest part is not letting go, but realizing you should.

I’ve noticed something strange about human emotions.

Even when we know something hurts us,

we still go back to it.

Especially when it comes to people.

You tell yourself, “This is the last time.”

You promise you won’t repeat the same mistake.

But somehow,

you find yourself back in the same place…

with the same person…

feeling the same pain.

Why does this happen?

In my experience, it’s not always about love.

Sometimes, it’s about familiarity.

You get used to someone.

Their presence becomes a part of your routine.

Even their absence feels uncomfortable.

So you don’t go back because it’s right.

You go back because it feels familiar.

And familiarity can be addictive.

There’s also hope.

A small voice inside you says,

“Maybe this time it will be different.”

You hold on to memories,

to the good moments,

to the version of them you wish was real all the time.

But reality doesn’t always match that version.

And slowly, you start losing yourself.

Not all at once,

but in small pieces.

You ignore your own feelings.

You compromise more than you should.

You accept less than you deserve.

And still…

you go back.

Because letting go feels harder than holding on.

But here’s the truth I’ve learned—

Going back to the same pain

doesn’t make it love.

It just makes it a pattern.

And patterns don’t break

until you decide to break them.

It’s not easy.

But sometimes, choosing yourself

is the only way to stop hurting.

Just something I’ve been reflecting on lately. Have you ever found yourself going back to someone you knew wasn’t right for you?
