Dungeon Series: Pasture Mimics

"Excuse me, shepherd!", you shout from about thirty meters away. You run closer to the first humanoid you've encountered in twelve long days and hundreds of kilometers of travel.

As you approach, you pass many sheep. Dumb sheep. Not eating, not sleeping, not doing anything except for gazing into a mindless nothingness.

"...I need... to tend to my flock... please leave", the shepherd says as you approach. They are soaked with sweat and look very pale.

"But I have traveled for days, can you not spare a sip of water, or perhaps even a smidge of dried mutton?", you plead.

"I.... I can.... I can not. Please leave."

"I beg of you! I'll be damned if I proceed with my journey, starved and thirsty!"

"I... hngggghhh.... I.... gasps.... you.... leave.... please....", the shepherd whispers with a dry mouth and sweaty brow. Blood runs from his temple, his flesh unstitches between his eyes.

His head splits open, in half, all the way down to the bottom of his torso. A large mouth appears with a wet, slimy tongue jutting out at an alarming pace, darting toward your direction

You dodge, falling prone at the feet of two sheep. Or are they sheep? Massive, bloody mouths with sharp teeth and a wily, probing tongues quickly make their way towards your face.

You draw your sword and say a quick prayer through your parched, dry lips. It appears they are as hungry as you are.

Happy October, folks! I drew up something a little spooky for the season. A scene of wild mimic sheep, ordered by their mimic Shepherd. Sort of a fun one. If you've played Dungeons & Dragons, you are surely familiar with animated treasure chests that eat the sorry peasants looking for a little gold.

Inanimate objets are usually the choice object for a mimic to polymorph into.

Well, what if a mimic took shape of a living thing? To resemble flesh and blood from a distance to an adventurer. When the adventurer gets too close, too prodding, the mimic springs into action, taking bite of the prey in which it lured.
