Is Medium worth 5$/month?

Getting straight to the point: Mediums "premium-plan" is definitely worth 5 bucks monthly. As a reader, you will have unlimited access to all articles/stories and will never see the annoying "you have reached all your free articles" message. Furthermore, you won't ever see ads across all your devices. And you even get the membership cheaper when you buy it annually (50$/year).

So… it's like a newspaper subscription?

No, not really. Certainly, you pay to get news, insights, or any kind of story. The major difference though: Authors like me are getting paid based on the reading time of paying users who read our stories. Hence you can reward your favorite authors and give back to the community.

That's cool and all, but 50$ is mucho…

I get it. 50$ is a lot of money to many of us. Yet, I always view it as an investment into me and my future. Essentially we are paying for knowledge and insights from grassroots we else would never get. Especially niche knowledge is well represented on Medium and I personally follow crypto-authors. The insights I get from those sources became invaluable to me.

I am on Medium every day, just like reading the newspaper. Thinking about it, it actually has become my primary source of getting my interest-specific news. Certainly, when I come across major news I will always double-check the information with more reliable sources. Nonetheless, I found no better website to create awareness for news in my specific niche of interest. Again, thinking in terms of a newspaper subscription, I believe Medium holds the most value and is actually the only one I would recommend anyone to pay for.
