My answer after 10 years online: Memes didn’t just make the internet better. They became the internet’s official language.

Think about it.

1. Memes = Universal Translation
   I’ve chatted with people from Nigeria, Brazil, Japan, Ukraine. We don’t speak the same language. But we all understand this 😂 GIF.
   A meme about “Monday morning” hits the same in Lagos, London, and Los Angeles. Text needs translation. Memes don’t.

2. GIFs = Emotion in 3 Seconds
   The prompt asks: "What would a world without memes/GIFs be like?"
   It would be a world of “I’m fine.” “Okay.” “That’s good.”
   Dry. Flat. Misunderstood.

Add a GIF of Michael Scott saying "That's what she said" and suddenly everyone gets the vibe. GIFs give tone that text kills. They prevent 80% of online fights.

1. Memes = Cultural Memory
   Every generation has proverbs. My grandfather had "A stitch in time saves nine."
   My generation has "Nobody: ... Me: ..."
   Memes are how we document history now. Elections, fuel prices, NEPA, exam stress — all captured in 1 image. 50 years from now, historians won’t read tweets. They’ll study memes.

So is this a core area of the internet now? 100% YES.
Remove memes/GIFs and the internet becomes Wikipedia. Informative, yes. Human? No.

Memes and GIFs didn’t just make chats lively. They gave the internet a soul.
