Little Giraffe Library 长颈鹿图书馆

An old village house transformed into a library.

Throw back last weekend, we came across this Little Giraffe Library in a housing area of Cheras, Malaysia. Little Giraffe Library is a neighborhood library for kindergartners and primary school children . But it also serves food and drinks!

The curator, Lee Soon Yong, a young Malaysian who was born in this village, together with other 3 founders, Loke Chee Yung, Chua Ban Chuen and Joden Pu, run this community library, out of love for his "kampung"(place where he was born and brought up). The mission of this library is to cultivate healthy habit of reading while encouraging parents to spend time with their children here. They hope to change the society by encouraging critical thinking and the pursuit of knowledge among children and parents. This place is a long term social educational-based project with emphasis on community service.

To payout the monthly rental of RM1,000, part of the library serves as a cafe, selling Nasi Kerabu, Rojak, Ice Cream Waffle and more. Lee hopes to make this a prototype for more community libraries to be set up by self-sustaining. That day we just has lunch, so we ordered drinks only.
