Pass Down Values, Not Just Valuables
Hello friends, happy new day. I am glad to share this thought that has been in my heart with you.
We often measure our life's successes by material possessions. Many well-meaning parents dedicate their lives to securing a future for their children. They labour, save, invest, and build, all to ensure that their children never lack what they themselves struggled to obtain. It is a noble and admirable intention, but sadly, it often misses one crucial element of transferring values.
In my clime, I have seen a hardworking father rise from poverty and successfully build thriving business. I have also seen a resourceful mother sacrifice comfort to ensure her children receive the best education money can buy. Yet, in their zeal to provide everything, they sometimes forget to teach the "something" that made it all possible - discipline, faith, vision, integrity, and sacrifice. They provide the fruit but never expose the root.
Without these values, wealth becomes a ticking time bomb. Children who inherit riches but lack responsibility often fall into wasteful living, and entitlement. Some children become depressed st the slightest denial of their demands. They may grow up surrounded by abundance, yet empty of purpose. The assets meant to secure their future seldom become instruments of ruin. Worse still, they may fail to build anything worth handing to the next generation, thus ending the legacy at just one generation of prosperity.
True legacy is not measured by the assets we leave to our children, but the values we leave in them.
This would be a call to every succeeding parent to teach their children the story behind their successes. Let the children see the early mornings, the difficult decisions, the times you failed and got back up. Let them participate in the family business or community projects. Give them responsibilities. Let them manage small budgets. Expose them to mentors, faith, and principles that have shaped your journey as a parent. Above all, model the character you desire to see in them.
There is nothing wrong with leaving an inheritance. In fact, Proverbs 13:22 says, “A good man leaves an inheritance for his children’s children.” But inheritance without instruction is a curse in disguise. Without the compass of values, the map of wealth only leads to lostness.
This is a call for parents to be intentional about raising children who are not just rich in possessions but rich in purpose. There is the need to pass down honour, faith, work ethic, empathy, courage, and the wisdom to steward whatever they receive. In doing so, parents will successfully build generational-succeeding wealth and enduring legacies.
