The Night of Empty Pockets: A Real Life Lesson
There is a big difference between reading an old piece of wisdom and living through the exact moment that inspired it. For nine long years, I have been deeply immersed in the rewarding world of writing reality-based stories for my will.
Yet, one of the most striking lessons on vulnerability did not come from a book or a digital draft at all. It happened on a dark road exactly five years ago when my close friends and I went out for a ride.
It was a very late, breezy night when my friends and I decided to head out for an aimless night cruise. We were a loud and energetic group of ten people split across four different motorbikes enjoying the beautiful weather together. I was riding pillion with a close friend on our bike, completely absorbed in the great energy of the group. In the rush of leaving the house, I made a critical mistake because I forgot my wallet on the desk.

The Carefree Walk
When we finally reached our destination, we parked all the motorbikes in a designated commercial parking lot for safety reasons. Leaving the keys behind, we ended up walking on foot for almost three hours to explore the very quiet streets. Time flies fast when you are in good company and the fatigue of the long walk caught up with us.
But the real challenge of the night was just waiting to reveal itself when we returned to our parked bikes. As we started heading home, a sudden jarring thud echoed from underneath us because the rear tire had completely ruptured.
The Anatomy of Panic
We pulled over to the side of the road next to a tiny dimly lit roadside puncture mechanic shop. It was past midnight and I instinctively reached into my pocket for cash only to realize my wallet was missing. I turned to my riding partner but his pockets were entirely empty too which made the situation feel much worse.
There we stood isolated under the dim light, looking at the mechanic who shows a flat tire. The mechanic submerged our inner tube into a small muddy metal tub of water to locate the tiny air leaks.
When your pockets are empty every single tiny bubble that escapes the rubber tube makes your heart beat very fast. Each bubble represents a sudden expense you cannot afford and a deep feeling of absolute helplessness on the road.
An Unexpected Grace
Just as the anxiety was reaching its peak a complete stranger (the man who was waiting for the mechanic to fix his bike so he could go back home with his family) noticed our distressed faces. He simply stepped up paid the mechanic for the patch and rode back into the night before we could speak.
That night permanently altered my perspective because it taught me that financial anxiety is a very difficult state of mind. It also reminded me of the profound impact of unexpected human kindness, which influences how I write my stories.
