to Liquid Eye's Flower Shop, the place to behold and enjoy colorful photos of beautiful flowers of all sorts. Today we are overwhelmed by the blossom of thousands of rhododendrons that I discovered on one of my recent morning walks. These magnificent beauties were crying out to be photographed from all angles, so I took the time to take a few shots for you to enjoy.

It was a nice fresh morning when i was walking through Berlin’s Tiergarten when I found myself unexpectedly dazzled in the middle of a massive sea of purple. Thousands of purple rhododendron blossoms surprised me as i turned around that one corner behind the Biergarten at the „Neuer See“ called lake.

The sheer volume of these flowers was almost surreal, transforming an ordinary morning walk into a moment of pure wonder. It started behind the Biergarten and stretched towards the Spanish Embassy and further into the Tiergarten park.

The vibrant purple of the rhododendrons stood in sharp contrast to the lush greenery everywhere in the Tiergarten. This wasn’t just a handful of blooms scattered here and there, this was a full-blown floral show spectacle! What a magical morning.

Interestingly, the one white rhododendron in the middle of this vast purple panorama, i tried to grow an offshoot once, looked like having a bad day today. Unlike its vibrant colorful neighbors, its petals already withered and fell off mostly as you can see here.

Another strange thing that struck me was the fragrance, or rather, the lack of it. With such a massive bloom, I expected a massive, overpowering scent that would numb me as I walked by, but nope, it was surprisingly gentle, almost not there. It was a soft, pleasant aroma that didn’t overwhelm my senses but rather complemented the visual spectacle i saw.

Here are some fascinating facts about these beautiful plants. Rhododendrons belong to the genus Rhododendron, which includes over a thousand species of woody plants. They are part of the heath family, Ericaceae, and are native to various regions, including Asia, North America, and Europe.

The name "rhododendron" comes from the Greek words "rhodon," meaning rose, and "dendron," meaning tree. So, in essence, we’re talking about “rose trees,” which is quite fitting given their gorgeous blooms.

Rhododendrons are known for their large, flowers that come in a variety of colors, including purple, pink, red, white, and yellow and they very much remind of another flower i very much like, the Dahlia. They prefer cooler climates, which explains their abundant presence in Berlin’s Tiergarten. These plants are not just beauties, they even provide food and habitat for various insects and birds.

Another interesting fact is that rhododendrons have been used in traditional medicine in some cultures. For instance, in Tibetan medicine, certain species are used for their claimed anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. However, it's important to note that parts of the plant, particularly the leaves, can be toxic if ingested.

As I walked along , the beauty of the purple rhododendrons lingered in my mind. It’s surely amazing how a simple morning walk can turn into such an unforgettable experience when nature decides to dress up and put on a show.

If you ever find yourself in Berlin during the blooming season, a visit to the Tiergarten is definitely mandatory! Find the "Café Am Neuen See" beer garden near the lake and the rhododendron gardens are located directly when you enter the park from the back door, so to speak, or when you walk through the park from the Spanish embassy towards the beer garden.
