Coffee Tovar: aroma, flavor and tradition

“Coffee, coffee, coffee with milk, coffeeeee... Bring on the coffee pot with the coffee, with the coffee” 🥳🥳🥳 That's what I used to sing back when I was a camp counselor, hahaha. The song popped into my head because it inspires joy and wonder when you discover something fascinating.

I was out for a walk with my boyfriend in Colonia Tovar, in the state of Aragua, Venezuela, and the first thing I noticed was how crowded the place was, which I really liked because it’s a sign of prosperity; you can also see strawberry fields, among other fruit crops, and of course, coffee; although we didn’t see the coffee plantations themselves, we did spot a roadside stand right across from the church, and I couldn’t help but stop.

I’m talking about Café Tovar—it’s artisanal, wood-fired roasted by a family that has kept the tradition alive for four generations. The aroma is intense, divine—and their slogan is spot-on: “Flavor that begins with the aroma.” As for the taste, it’s very, very rich. It has body, intensity, and a variety of flavors. You can find the traditional blend, as well as ones with hazelnuts, ginger, coconut, vanilla and cinnamon, cardamom, chocolate, and almonds.

There are many varieties available; we bought two 50-gram packs to try, one with hazelnuts and the other with ginger. I tried the hazelnut one at home with my son, and he asked me why we didn’t buy more—hahaha, it’s that tasty.

In future posts, I’ll continue sharing other discoveries from Colonia Tovar. For now, you know what to do—time for coffee.
