The Mysterious Ring
Jake worked at the downtown jewelry store and was just an ordinary man. Despite seeing numerous elegant necklaces and rings, he was continually drawn to one particular ring. It was a big golden ring, with a weird looking green gem in the center.
"Hey Mitch, what ya know about that weird ring over there?" Jake asked his coworker one slow afternoon.
Mitch looked over at the ring Jake was pointing at. "Oh that old thing? No, I don't have much knowledge of it. It was brought in years ago by a man who claimed it to be a family heirloom. However, no one has ever bought it since they believe it to be as ugly as sin."
Jake couldn't take his eyes off the ring's strange green gem. "It just seems...I dunno, different somehow. You ever noticed anything weird about it?"
Mitch shrugged. "Can't say as I have. Why don't ya take a closer look at it after we close up tonight?"
That night, Jake stayed behind after locking up the store. He removed the intriguing ring from the case and gave it a thorough examination. He was mesmerized by that green diamond the more he stared at it. The stone appeared to be glowing, but it was actually more like it was pulsating.
Jake put the ring on his finger without giving it a second thought. He immediately felt a surge of energy pass through his body. The space surrounding him became indistinct and lost focus.
Jake's vision eventually cleared, and he realized he was no longer at the jewelry store. He stood in a heavy fog, surrounded by gnarled trees, in the center of a muddy bayou.
"Where in tarnation am I?" Jake whispered as he looked about in disbelief.
A croaking voice made Jake jump. "You are in the realm of Zzrathica, human."
Jake spun around to see a freaky creature half-man, half-toad. It blinked its big bulgy eyes at him.
"Who...what're you?" Jake stammered.
"I am Griblix, keeper of the swamp realm," the creature stated. "And that ring on your hand is the ancient Portal Ring, granting passageway between our worlds."
Jake looked down at the ring on his finger. "You mean...this thing transported me here?"
Griblix nodded his warty head slowly. "It only works once every hundred years, on the night of the blood moon. You must be the chosen one."
"Chosen for what exactly?" Jake gulped.
"To be the ruler of Zzrathica, of course!" Griblix exclaimed. "We have waited eons for a human to take the throne and lead our people into a new era of prosperity!"
Jake started sweating bullets. "But...but I don't know nothing about ruling any kingdom! I'm just a jewelry store clerk!"
"Do not fret, human," Griblix said, waving a sticky hand. "You will learn. And besides, the prophecy decreed it shall be so. You are the chosen one!"
Before Jake could protest further, a bunch of other freaky swamp creatures emerged from the fog. They all bowed down reverentially.
"All hail King Jake!" Griblix announced. "Our new ruler has arrived!"
The creatures erupted in raucous cheers and tongue-flicks. Jake's mind reeled as they ushered him towards a big mossy castle in the distance.
As a bemused Jake stumbled along, he caught a glimpse of the green ring still on his finger. He had a feeling this was just the start of one wild, swampy adventure.
