Can Belgian trappist beers compare to modern craft beers? Which one do you prefer?
Well, here we are for another great #beersaturday event. How are you? Did you enjoy the last week?
With the ongoing craze for the craft beer industry we are witnessing various experiments with abusive hop usage, which most of the time is great, but sometimes results with not so good beers. Yet, there are still these trappist beers, which rely entirely on the malt character.
I remember back in the days when I started exploring new tastes in beer, these Belgian gems seemed pretty interesting and quite different for me. They hit me on entirely new level, most commonly with blondes and tripels, quadrupel was consumed only occasionally.
I liked the malt flavor with these high phenols a lot, although a bit strange at times. But this was a quality that was always welcome by my young beer soul. And to be honest… Quadrupels were my favorite and I even seeked for a XII brewed by Westvelteten. I haven’t had the chance to put my hands on one, and I still hope that one day I will have the chance to try it.
Later in the days, when my beer soul started to develop exponentially, I found the beauty of craft beers and more specifically heavily hopped IPAs. They were another world of special beers and their tastes were always different.
Depending on the type of the hops, you can find citrus flavors, flowery ones, or even pine notes. Furthermore, you can boost your senses with high IBU beers, or soft and not bitter at all ones. The choice is upto your own tastes.
And now I am thinking… in the last years Belgian trappist beers are somehow in the bottom line of my wishlist and I have some only when someone makes a present for me and I cannot choose myself. Yes, I still enjoy them, but if I had to choose a beer, I would probably never buy one.
And wbat is your opinion? If you have the chance to choose, which one would you prefer? Do you want strong hop aromas and bitterness, or you prefer the bold character of fine malts and phenols? What is the finest trappist beer that you have ever had?
Wish you a wonderful new week, full of great feelings and emotions.
Be happy and cheers! Bye!
