Tokyo has a lot to offer, and there are countless places where you can experience the charm of this magnificent city. The Japanese capital's newest landmark is the SkyTree, which is actually already over 10 years old.

The Tokyo Skytree is a television tower located in the Sumida district, slightly east of the city center. At 634 meters, it is the tallest structure in Japan and one of the tallest towers in the world. Construction began in 2008 and was completed around four years later. The Skytree was officially opened on May 22, 2012, and since then has not only served as a television and radio transmission tower, but is also a landmark of the Japanese capital that can be seen from afar.

Its height of 634 meters was deliberately chosen because “634” can also be read as “Musashi” – a historical name for the Tokyo region. The tower has two enclosed observation decks at heights of 350 meters and 450 meters, which are among the highest in Japan and offer a panoramic view of the entire metropolis.

I haven't been up the SkyTree myself yet, as it's far too crowded for my liking and I don't feel like queuing for hours. But I'm always delighted when I spot this elegant tower in the cityscape, and the rest of my small team feels the same way.

Whether by day or by night, the SkyTree really stands out and is worth looking at it even from a distance. Of course, it's also fun to get closer, and I'll probably find my way to the top one day as well. Let's see what I can discover from up there...

Tokio hat eine Menge zu bieten usn es gibt unzählige Orte, an denen man dem Charme dieser großartigen Stadt näher kommen kann. Das neueste Wahrzeichen der japanischen Hauptstadt ist der SkyTree, welcher mittlerweile aber auch schon über 10 Jahre auf seinem Buckel hat.

Der Tokyo Skytree ist ein Fernsehturm und steht im Stadtbezirk Sumida ein wenig östlich vom Stadtzentrum. Er ist mit 634 Metern die höchste Struktur Japans sowie einer der höchsten Türme der Welt. Der Bau begann im Jahre 2008, und die vollständige Fertigstellung erfolgte rund 4 Jahre später. Am 22. Mai 2012 wurde der Skytree offiziell eröffnet und dient seitdem nicht nur als Fernseh- und Rundfunksendeturm, sondern ist auch ein weithin sichtbares Wahrzeichen der japanischen Hauptstadt.

Seine Höhe von 634 m ist bewusst gewählt, da „634“ als „Musashi“ gelesen werden kann – ein historischer Name für die Region Tokio. Der Turm besitzt zwei geschlossene Aussichtsplattformen in 350 m und 450 m Höhe, die zu den höchsten in Japan gehören und einen Rundblick über die gesamte Metropole bieten.

Ich selber war noch nicht auf dem SkyTree drauf, dafür ist es mir dort viel zu voll und ich habe keine Lust, stundenlang anstehen zu müssen. Aber ich freue mich jedes Mal wieder, wenn ich diesem eleganten Turm im Stadtbild entdecke, und genau so geht es dem Rest von meinem kleinen Team.

Egal ob bei Tag oder bei Nacht, des SkyTree macht wirklich was her und es lohnt sich auch nur, ihn aus der Ferne zu bewundern. Klar macht es auch Spaß, ihm näherzukommen, und wahrscheinlich werde ich eines Tages auch einmal den Weg nach ganz oben finden. Mal schauen, was ich von dort aus, dann alles entdecken kann...
