Long exposure photography is really cool, you can do a lot of cool stuff like blurring the clouds or photographing the stars. The problem begins when you need an external control and you don't have one... actually you can try to shoot just by pressing FIRE but still you can move camera (believe me I tried).
But still there is hope! For sony cameras (and prolly for all other too) there is an mobile app which can be used as your remote control. The only issue (on sony app, the other like canon I haven't tried) is that you don't have RAW. It shoots only in JPG but still it's better to have jpg than no photo right?
That way without external remote (and actually without good tripod cuz I have only gorilla pod) you can shoot long exposures, cool ha? :D
