We Have Our Very Own Stream

Our new home has one feature I've always wanted and am very excited about. Right in the middle of our land is a natural stream. Having a water source on your own land is very important and I find so much peace in the sound of running water.

We had a ton of rain our first few days in the new house which turned our tiny trickle of a stream into a good sized flow of water. I went out there a few times to sit and just listened to the sounds of nature and enjoyed the peace of being removed from society.

My Ducks First Stream Experience

I introduced my ducks to the site of their future home. I plan on building them a house near the stream so they always have a water source and can be happy. They were adorable and seemed really happy.

The stream varies from a very small trickle to a little river after hard rain. We have a hand dug cistern at a higher point in the stream that catches rain water. This is useful if we ever need an alternative water source or need to water our garden.

The Stream Needs A Cleanup

The stream has cinder blocks, bricks, pipes, and other stuff that needs to be cleaned up left by the previous owners.

The neat thing about this stream and cistern is that at one time it had pipes underneath it to transport water all the way to a spring house right next to the house. It kept the building cool to store milk and food back in the old days and also housed a pool of clean drinking water. The pipes are pulled up though in this one spot and need to be replaced. They are old cast iron pipes and look pretty worse for ware.

We'll have to dig these up and get them out of there. They are a bit of a hazard if you fall on them.

I'm really enjoying our new home and love the stream. I go out everyday in the morning and sit down next to the stream and it feels surreal we have such a wonderful new home. There is so much to explore and see. Hopefully in future posts I'll share more of my discoveries.
