Before They Learn Elsewhere.
Sex education is a topic a lot of people, let's say parent find it a lot hard to talk to their children about. Some of us didn't grow up being oriented about it, it was what we learned in school and what we later found out ourselves. Also, some parents are of the opinion that such a conversation should only happen when their children are in their late teens, which I feel ought not to be. A lot of teenagers today now know and see things, as of today we can see teenagers, in their early teens already getting pregnant.

Now, some children can be so free to ask about it themselves, and it won't be gone for us as parents to shut them down, rather we should answer their questions the best way possible. If we don't, be sure that they will ask a friend, classmate or even a neighbor who may not tell them the entire truth. The social media is even there now, they will just look it up and go ahead with any narrative they find there.
I don't know the exact age to state, but I feel such a conversation should start before a child becomes a teenager. We can start with something as small as the name of each body part, what privacy is, the importance of privacy, what touching is and what it means and all of that. And as they began to grow we will begin to dig further into things too, tell them what relationship is, what puberty is, the change they will begin to see and notice, how it is a part of them, what they should do, how they can freely talk to you, what they need, what menstruation is, what pregnancy is, what feelings and emotions is, what sex is, how infections can be transmitted and a whole lot more.
The male child should be taught all of these things too, including how not to touch a girl child anyhow or in a way that will make her feel somehow or uncomfortable, how he should respect boundaries, seek for consent and be ready to take responsibility for whatever actions or choices he makes. A girl child should as well know what value is, be able to speak up, and how to never feel pressured into doing what she's not ready for.

One thing I've noticed is how that most parents teach with fear instead of teaching with facts. I saw a post sometimes last week that reads, "And do not just give her vague warning like: you can get pregnant if a man touches you - tell her what that 'touch' means." It's just like I've said earlier, let these children know what A is and what B is, give them clear explanations, go into details for them and let them know all that is needed, else we will be shocked at what they would do or learn from elsewhere.
Conversations like this in all honesty should be very normal. The relationship between a child-parents too should be a very strong one. Your child should be able to talk to you about anything and everything. They shouldn't be scared to approach you, and on sensitive matters like sex, you shouldn't shut him or her down. Don't make something up for them, let them know the truth and the consequences of any of their actions too.
In conclusion, teach them to respect themselves, to have self-control, to build good friendship, to know what to entertain and what not to. I know that such conversation might feel somehow at first, but as a parent you owe your children that much, else you might find yourself to be blamed later.
