The Passage of Time and Nostalgia: The Sad Reality of the Lake of Dreams in Camagüey 🇨🇺

Hello, dear Ecency community! I’ve been away from the platform for a while, and I wanted to share with you the reason for my absence. I was traveling, visiting another province to clear my mind and reconnect with places I once knew. However, the trip left me with a rather bittersweet feeling.
It deeply saddened me to see how the years go by and how decay is slowly consuming places that were once full of life and color. It’s hard to face the reality that time is unforgiving, and that neglect can dim the light of the most beautiful spaces.
A clear example that broke my heart was visiting the "Lago de los Sueños" (Lake of Dreams) in the province of Camagüey.
For those who don't know its history, this place was inaugurated about a decade ago (around 2014) as an ambitious and beautiful recreational project. They rescued the area of an old reservoir in the Julio Antonio Mella district and transformed it into the epicenter of family fun. In its prime, the park had it all: several restaurants, sports areas, playgrounds, and its biggest attraction: boats and water bikes. It was common to see the lake full of families spending their weekends surrounded by music, food, and the laughter of children. It was a true oasis of leisure for the people of Camagüey.
Today, that "dream" has turned into a painful scene of abandonment. The facilities that once shone are now severely deteriorated, rust has taken over what little is left of the infrastructure and the boats, and a heavy silence has replaced the joyful bustle of the past. Overgrowth and an evident lack of maintenance have almost completely erased the magic this place once held.
Walking around feels like strolling through a graveyard of memories. The Lake of Dreams stands today as a sad reminder of what it used to be, a victim of crises and the unforgiving passage of time.
I wanted to vent this feeling with you. Even though it hurts to see the decay, I choose to hold on to the memories of that park when it was full of life.
Has something similar ever happened to you when visiting a place you held dear? Let me know in the comments.
