¿Hasta que edad juegan los niños? / Up to what age do children play?

For me, the answer is already very clear: age has nothing to do with the ability to play, to create parallel worlds, and to dream and live with the mind of a child. Beyond biological age, there is still a child within each of us, even though many (for whatever reason) insist on keeping that child hidden.

But in this case, the question arises from the policies of many parks and establishments, which prevent a very tall child—or perhaps a teenager—from gaining access.

I am one of those who defends children’s right to remain children—not only for the sake of play, but also to preserve the innocence characteristic of those irreplaceable years—and I get angry when, whether with my own children or someone else’s, the adults around them insist on forcing them to grow up too quickly.

I recall the case of a friend’s daughter, who was taller than average, and at a park she was told she couldn’t use the swings because they were for little girls. Although she was 8 years old but had the height of a 12-year-old, she was forbidden from enjoying the playground equipment—not for the safety of younger children, but simply because she didn’t fit the standard.

I have also witnessed situations in which children are offered alcoholic beverages simply because they show curiosity, without considering the consequences of consuming even small amounts. Specifically, my cousins did this with their children, who were also exposed to double entendres, so that they would later mimic those same behaviors with my oldest son—whom I defended against their advances, earning the disapproval of the entire family.

A few days ago, I went to a public park with my youngest son, who is now 11 years old. Although his innocence remains intact in many ways, he is already beginning to show the changes typical of puberty. When he wanted to use some of the playground equipment, he asked me if he could, and since there were few other children there, I told him to go ahead and enjoy them all—with the warning to be careful around the younger children.

By instilling in him that sense of responsibility toward caring for others, I’m not only teaching him a value that’s somewhat lost today, but I’m also affirming his right to have fun on playground equipment that still interests him.

In particular, I am in favor of outdoor play or activities that encourage children to develop mental and motor skills, rather than leaving them in the care of an electronic device or a digital screen—as long as we help them understand that they must be mindful of their actions so as not to disturb others, and that their rights end where those of others begin.
