An iconic city symbol

Hello, everyone

Today I present a photo of the emblematic lighthouse of Havana, an iconic symbol of the city and its rich maritime history.

This lighthouse, which today is known as El Morro lighthouse, in its early years was baptized as Faro O'Donnell in honor of Captain General Leopoldo O'Donnell, an important Spanish military of the nineteenth century.
With the passage of time, the original name was losing use and since it was erected, it has been a silent witness from its privileged place at the entrance of the Havana Bay of many historical events, covering from the occupation of the city by the English in 1762, the wars of independence and the Cuban revolution.
Together with the Castle of the Three Kings of Morro and other strengths of Old Havana, it was recognized as a World Heritage by UNESCO in 1982. This recognition highlights its historical, architectural and cultural importance.
From its origins as a simple watchtower to its electrification in the twentieth century, the lighthouse has guided sailors and has been a cultural symbol rooted in the heart of the Cubans.
Today, with its powerful light visible to 27 nautical miles, it is still an emblem of resistance, history and national pride.
