Ahora llovía a cántaros.

English Version

Songs are stories told with melody. Sometimes, their format doesn't allow the story to extend beyond a few verses. This allows the listener to unleash their imagination and become involved in the story, making it their own.

To participate in the creative exercise proposed by Literatos: The Soundtrack of Your Story, I chose the song Causas y azares by the great Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez. His entire body of work is filled with poetry that invites reflection. This song in particular, every time I hear it, makes me wonder: how do the stories told in his verses end? Here's an opportunity to explore what happened beyond what the poet suggests in his song. The best part is that everyone can imagine their own version of how Pedro and Juan's stories end, beyond the verses Silvio sings with his uniquely melodic voice.

I invite you to read on. Thank you for reading my words.

Causes and chance

Pedro woke up at precisely 5:45, as he invariably did on office days. After completing his morning routine, he prepared breakfast. He turned on the television to listen to the news while he got dressed. On the screen, an experienced meteorologist was warning about worsening weather conditions for the day due to a cyclone approaching the city. The man glanced at the sky, somewhat incredulous at the clear morning light streaming through his window.

At 6:55, Pedro was already sitting at the bus stop, waiting for the bus that would arrive in five minutes. Right on schedule, the bus appeared, turning the corner and stopping in the parking lot. Pedro boarded, paid the driver, and found an empty seat in the back. From the bus window, he saw, forgotten next to the bench at the bus stop, the umbrella he had taken as a precaution when leaving home. He took advantage of the fact that the back door of the bus was still open and got off to pick it up. The bus continued on its route without him.

He had never missed the 7 a.m. bus to work before. He wasn't pleased about it, but he wasn't too worried either. The next one would arrive in 10 minutes, and he still had plenty of time. At that moment, Juan crossed the street toward the bus stop.

-I can't believe it, Pedro, my friend! How many years has it been since I've seen you?- The warm hug with which the two men greeted each other spoke volumes about their friendship.

They had known each other since childhood. Their lives took different paths after graduating from university. Pedro stayed to work in the capital, and Juan returned to their hometown.

Juan was passing through the city for some legal paperwork at offices in the area where Pedro lived.

-Come with me for a coffee- Juan invited, pointing to the small café on the corner. Pedro checked his watch and saw he had time before starting at the office. He also usually had a coffee at a café near his work.

Taking advantage of the still-pleasant weather, they sat under a green and yellow striped awning outside the café. For half an hour, between sips of coffee, they reminisced about old times, talked about their current lives and future plans. And, as expected, Elena was a recurring topic of conversation.

Pedro and Elena met at university. The young woman found in Juan a confidant with whom to share intimate details of her relationship with Pedro. Elena never suspected the love Juan felt for her. He knew how to hide it, as nothing would make him betray their friendship. Only now did Juan learn that Pedro and Elena had separated a year ago. For a moment, a guilty joy swelled in his chest.

The crackling of power lines, short-circuiting due to a violent gust of wind, interrupted their conversation. It had begun to rain, and the friends took shelter inside the café before the wires fell right where they had been sitting. The traffic light on the corner began to flash erratically.

It was getting late, and Pedro decided to take a taxi to work. The rain intensified, accompanied by a gale-force wind. The friends said their goodbyes when the taxi arrived. Pedro lent his umbrella to Juan so he wouldn't get wet on the way to his errand.

The taxi driver, disoriented by the erratic traffic lights, took advantage of a momentary green flash to cross the intersection. The impact was brutal. A cargo truck crashed into the side of the taxi. Pedro died instantly. Now it was pouring rain.

Pedro's funeral was held in the town where his parents still lived. It was still raining due to the bands of clouds left in the wake of the cyclone. Juan, under the umbrella his dear friend had given him, was the last person to leave the cemetery.

It was night when Juan returned home. A woman knocked on his door. He was surprised to see it was Elena looking for him. Upon learning of Pedro's death, she had wanted to say goodbye, but her car had broken down on the way and she hadn't arrived in time. Now she was there, for Juan had been Pedro's best friend and his trusted confidant. He felt his heart flutter.
