IamAlive Day 17
Hi IamAlive Community,
Today I finally want to share my experience as a volunteer at the Spoedeisende Hulp (SEH) or as they call it in English the Emergency Room. The emergency Room in which I volunteer is located at the Academisch Ziekenhuis Suriname (AZP). I started in May of 2021.
In my honest opinion as an outsider I’ve never ever experienced heartbreak and lost yet at the same time so much kindness and care. Now I will be honest, my experience was not at all 100% positive because I’ve had to encounter rude people along the way. The staff were also not collaborating with me as a volunteer and at some point I truly felt that my work was being delivered in vain. But, regardless of this obstacle, I looked forward to it and kept volunteering.
The most shocking experience for me was witnessing the loss of a 6 weeks baby (at this point I would call it an infant). I was utterly devastated with that news when I came to realize that none of the 6 doctors that were providing the necessities could help this infant. I realized in that exact moment that time on this earth is very limited and when it’s your time to go out of this world nothing & no one can help you. That was the day that I began to be grateful for the many things that I have in my life. My focus completely shifted from focusing on the things that I didn’t have into focusing on the things that I already have/ own. But most importantly I am starting to forgive those that did me wrong because holding a grudge also won’t make you happy in life.
So yes, like I already said my experience wasn’t all positive, but this great life lesson that not even my university study provided me is something that I wouldn’t trade for nothing in the world.
I am alive today because in the mits of loss, grief and chaos I found my purpose in life. I am very happy with this life decision I took. I can proudly say that I’m still volunteering in SEH till the 31st December 2021.
