Norways largest mine

Far north in Arctic Norway we have this old iron mining operation.

The mine is more than 100 years old.

The pits are in some places far deeper than the ocean surface.

The waste rock piles are in some places higher than most other mountains in the area.

Still there is alot of iron here underground. Probably enough for the next 100 years.

Yet the mine and its ore deposit is quite small in international scale.

Its two major advantages are the fact that it is located relatively close to the ocean ( cheap transport), and that it has high quality low sulphur ore, requiring less processing and producing less polution than many other iron ores.
