Dove's flight

Photo credit : Andrew Kerr Photography (not my inspiration for the poem, but quite an effective image I think)

Across the world
A dove once flew
To take my heart
From me to you
The darkness black
Molasses thick
Against the sun
She flew so quick

Alone and silent
Between each star
She flew so straight
She flew so far
In the night
Shrouded in mist
A storm arose
Her aim did twist

The wind did blow
And strive she did
Against her foe
Who tried to rid
Her precious cargo
Deep inside
My beating heart
She still did hide

Through the thunder,
Lightning, Rain
Lashing winds
Shooting pain
Dove held on
With all her might
Hero dove
Held on so tight

In distance far
Beheld the sun
Dove raced on
To make her run
Head held high
She saw the end
Suddenly
The wind did rend

From the sky
Hero dove fell
Heading for
A massive swell
Monster waves
Around poor dove
Lost at sea
My heart my love

Swirled around
And up and down
up in the sky
Then down to drown
Hopeless dove
In ocean deep
Hopeless me
With dove would sleep

In an instant
Her heart swelled
Dove's own strength
Could not be quelled
From the sea
Her drowned wings burst
Give everything
Or damned be cursed

Dove gave it all
One final stand
Heading now
A course unplanned
Lighting flashed
And winds groped
Dove did more
Than I had hoped

Through the storm
And through the rain
Hero dove
Did rise again
Phoenix dove
From ashes true
This is how
I true love you
