The Filipino Spirit of Giving, No Matter How Small
Happy Tuesday Hivers!
One of the traits of Filipinos is generosity. Yes, no matter how little we have, we always find a way to share it with our friends and neighbors. It's a simple gesture, but it reflects the kindness and community spirit that many Filipinos are known for.
I have witnessed this since I was young. Whenever there was a special occasion in our neighborhood, it was common to hear someone say, “Please get this,” which usually meant that food had been sent over from a neighbor's celebration.
We do the same in our family. If we have a gathering or special occasion at home and some of our neighbors are unable to attend, we make sure to bring food to them. It is one of the beautiful traditions that many Filipinos continue to practice.
Just two weeks ago, our neighbor came home from her morning walk while my mom and I were busy working in the garden. She called us over and asked if we would like to grow some basil in our garden. Of course, we gladly said yes.
It turned out that she had brought four basil seedlings planted in small cups. She told us that a friend had given them to her, and since four seemed a bit too many for her, she decided to share two of them with us.
We were so happy because I had actually mentioned to my mom that I wanted to grow basil in our garden. It felt like perfect timing. Not long after, our neighbor came by and generously gave us two basil plants.
The next day, my mom transferred the basil seedlings into a larger pot. Looking at them now, they are thriving beautifully. Every time I see them, I am reminded of the kindness of our neighbor and how simple acts of generosity can bring so much joy. It may have been just two small basil plants, but to us, they were a wonderful blessing and another example of the Filipino spirit of sharing.
No matter how big or small our blessings are, we gladly share them with others. For us, generosity is not measured by how much we give, but by our willingness to share what we have with family, friends, and neighbors.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
