Our First Lettuce Harvest: Fresh Greens Straight from the Garden
Happy Thursday Hivers!
Lettuce is one of the plants that requires extra care because it is quite sensitive. In the Philippines, the weather can be extremely hot, so it needs a net cover to protect it from direct sunlight and heavy rain, as too much exposure can cause it to wilt quickly. It also requires regular watering, healthy soil, and frequent checks to make sure insects are not damaging the leaves. Growing lettuce takes time and effort, but despite all the extra care it needs, my mother continues to plant it because she loves eating fresh lettuce. Her determination makes all the hard work worthwhile.
Our main goal for the garden is for household consumption. If there are extra harvests, we sell them to our neighbors or at the market. Since no one else in our barangay grows lettuce, we also have regular buyers, especially neighbors who enjoy eating it. They usually just mix it with mayonnaise and eat it directly, instead of making a full salad with mixed ingredients.
Even before harvest day, we already have buyers, mostly just our neighbors. I also post videos and photos on Facebook showing that we are growing lettuce, so some people already reserve in advance. Because of that, we don’t have a hard time looking for buyers anymore.
This morning was our scheduled harvest. According to my mother, lettuce should be harvested early in the morning. So when we arrived at the garden, the first thing we did was harvest it right away. We also brought a weighing scale because most of our customers only buy in small amounts, usually around a quarter kilo, since we sell it by the kilo.
Our buyers were very happy because the lettuce they bought was very fresh and free from chemicals, as my mother and I both prefer not to use any chemicals in our garden. Finally, we were able to harvest the lettuce that we had carefully grown.
Thank you for reading and see you on my next blog. Cheers!
