Causes of sickle cell anemia

Sickle cell disease is caused by faulty genes that a child inherits from their parents.

It's not caused by anything the parents did before or during the pregnancy and can't catch it from someone who has it.

There is no cure for most people with sickle cell anemia. But treatment can relieve pain and help prevent problem associate with the disease.

People with sickle cell disease have a problem with the genes involved in the development of haemoglobin.

A substance found in red blood cells that carry oxygen around the body.

Here are the symptoms and signs of sickle cell anemia, which vary from person to person and change over time include:
Anemia.
Episode of pain.
Painful swelling of hand and feet.
Frequent infection.
Delayed growth.
Vision problems.

Sickle cell anemia is a disorder of the blood caused by an inherited abnormal haemoglobin, the oxygen carrying protein within the red blood cells.

Affected infant do not develop symptoms in the first few months of life because the haemoglobin produced by the developing fetus(fetal haemoglobin) protect the red blood cells from suckling.

Although sickcle cell anemia is usually diagnosed in infancy, if you or your child develops any of the following problems, see your doctor right away or seek emergency medical care.
