Love: An Underrated Method of Discipline
A ku ipalemo odun ‡οΈ
Let's not digress much and get into the topic for today.
This weeks hive learners prompt is a pretty subjective one and its brings conversations were opinions differ across cultures and generations.
I am someone that doesn't believe in corporal punishment. I dislike it. I don't really resonate with the idea of an human-being being hit or physically violated just to prove a point or instill discipline. Don't get me wrong, the rod was used a few times on me as a child when my behaviour was unruly.
Thank God I was a child that listens and my parents weren't terrible beaters/punishers that left a scar in me or emotional trauma. Because of that, I can look back without resentment, but I also acknowledge that my experience isn't the same as everyone.
Even in the secondary school I attended. Cane was prohibited to be used on students, only the principal and HOD had the authority to carry out corporal punishment.
There are different kinds of children, some have coconut head π₯₯ and as a parent, you might need to make use of the cane a few times before they will listen and there are also kids that correction with love is enough to get them to behave appropriately.
Before we blame humanity losing out on a lot of things because parents have decided not to get physical when they dicipline ther kids. Lets take a step back and look at the generation before the genz's. They seem to have gotten the physical discipline more but when I speak and have a deep converation with a few of the friends I have, they are still carrying childhood trauma around with them.
They might be "disciplined" on the outside, but inside, they are dealing with anxiety, resentment, and broken relationships with their parents.
If physical discipline was the solution or cure for a broken society, that older generation would be completely flawless. In the socitey today, violence has been normalized as a tool for conflict resolution. When someone steals and the mob begins to beat the person the death, everyone has convinced themselves that he deserves it and its a discipline needed so there would be compliance and the act(theft) won't repeat itself. When a child learns that compliance comes through pain, they don't actually learn morality, they just learn how to avoid getting caught.
I don't think so. Honestly, the world has changed and you need to change with it. Your approach needs to be better with kids these days else you would lose them.
Kids today are more aware and expressive. If you resolve to violence, they would drift from you and the gap between parent and children would widen even more.
This would continue the cycle and breed another generation of traumatized individuals who comply out of fear rather than respect.
