A Venus in Old Havana

Street art has become a way of giving life to the walls and corners of the city. Walking through the streets in Old Havana is no longer just strolling among ancient buildings, it is also discovering images that surprise us and make us reflect.

That is what happened to me when I found this Habanera Venus, a very creole version of the famous sculpture The Venus de Milo, symbol of the ideal of beauty in antiquity. In this work the Cuban street artist (Fishu), who named this piece “Mestiza Venus,” left his personal mark, the ideal of beauty of a Cuban woman with cinnamon skin, curly and voluminous hair, and a body that transmits the strength and sensuality of the Cuban mulata. In addition to his personal vision of how a goddess should look, breaking schemes and stereotypes.

In this way the artist turned a wall into a tribute to the identity of the women of the island, mixing the classical with the popular. The Venus de Milo is transformed here into a Habanera muse, close and real, that reflects the diversity and cultural richness of Cuba.

Una Venus en la Habana Vieja

El arte callejero se ha convertido en una manera de darle vida a las paredes y rincones de la ciudad. Caminar por las calles en La Habana Vieja ya no es solo pasear entre edificaciones antiguas, también es descubrir imágenes que nos sorprenden y nos hacen reflexionar.

Así me pasó cuando encontré esta Venus Habanera, una versión muy criolla de la famosa escultura La Venus de Milo, símbolo del ideal de belleza en la antigüedad. En esta obra el artista cubano callejero (Fishu), que nombro esta obra como "Venus Mestiza" dejó su sello personal, el ideal de belleza de una mujer cubana con piel canela, cabello rizado, voluminoso y un cuerpo que transmiten la fuerza y la sensualidad de la mulata cubana. Ademas de su vision personal de como debe verse una diosa, rompiendo esquema y estereotipos.

De esta manera el artista convirtió una pared en un homenaje a la identidad de las mujeres de la isla, mezclando lo clásico con lo popular. La Venus de Milo se transforma aquí en una musa habanera, cercana y real, que refleja la diversidad y la riqueza cultural de Cuba.
