Paying to much on travel? "This is something we can all understand"

For years I've had trouble coming to terms with
1.The amount of fuel airplanes "carried" (250.000 tonnes) , 2.How Jet engined planes generated power for the 150+ hydraulic valves and pumps?
3.why there is never any purging frames coming out the after burner?.
