Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland

Auschwitz-Birkenau was the deadliest concentration camp during WW2. Over 1 million people died here. Out of respect for the victims you are asked not to take pictures with yourself in it on the site.

"For ever let this place be
a cry of despair
and a warning to humanity
where the nazis murdered
about one and a half million
men, women and children,
mainly jews
from various countries
of Europe."

Walking through this gate was one of the most memorable moments of any of my travels. Especially walking out, after the tour ended. It took me about a week to be my normal self again, and even now thinking back reminds me of the feelings I had when being confronted up close with the living conditions and stories from those who were held here. It leaves a deep impression visiting this site, and takes time to process.

Seeing the piles of shoes, suitcases, glasses and even human hair that was shaven off upon arrival left me silent and humbled.

Hundreds of picture frames on the walls from those who lost their lives here. The time frame between arrival in the camp and date of decease on most of them was not more than 3 months.

Sleeping conditions, when allowed to sleep at all, would mean sharing a 'shelf' with 5 to 7 others. Stacked 3 or 4 layers above each other.

When there was absolutely no more purpose for you, whether you'd be too weak to work or the space was needed for new prisoners, you were taken to the showers. When you disobeyed in any way, you were shot.

Horrifying medical procedures being testes on Jews, even babies. Many of them, such as eye color transplantation, never succeeding.
