A Stroll Through Rincón de Samariapo [Esp-Eng]

Last week I told you that I visited a place called Puerto Samariapo. This place is quite large, and it’s home to several smaller settlements that are, in fact, indigenous communities of different ethnic groups. During our visit here, we visited one of these communities, which belonged to the Jivi ethnic group. It was located about 2 km from Puerto Samariapo, and I think its name suited it perfectly: “El Rincón de Samariapo.”

This community is quite far from the port, which is where we were originally staying. In fact, to get there, we had to walk through the entire town—which, although not very large, still required quite a bit of walking—and also cross the river, which, fortunately, was low this time, so it wasn’t too difficult. But just getting there took us at least 30 minutes, and that’s where our 2-km trek into the interior began.

La semana pasada les conté que visité un lugar llamado Puerto Samariapo. Este lugar es bastante amplio y de él nacen otros lugares un poco más pequeños que son, en realidad, comunidades indígenas de diferentes etnias. En nuestra visita aquí visitamos una de estas comunidades, que era de la etnia Jivi. Esta quedaba a aproximadamente 2 km de distancia de Puerto Samariapo y su nombre siento que le quedaba superbién: "El Rincón de Samariapo".

Esta comunidad se encuentra bastante lejos del puerto, que es donde nosotros originalmente nos estábamos quedando. De hecho, para poder llegar ahí tuvimos que cruzar todo el pueblo que, aunque no es muy grande, sí requiere que se camine bastante, y también cruzar el río que felizmente esta vez estaba bajo, así que no fue tan complicado. Pero para simplemente llegar ahí tardamos al menos 30 minutos y allí empezó nuestro recorrido de 2 km adentro.

To get there, we walked a long way, and given the time of day and the local climate, it wasn’t that easy to get there because we got really tired. When we arrived, we realized there were very few houses, and they were quite far apart from one another. Even so—and this is something that surprises me—this area, as remote and hot as it is, is actually quite beautiful. I say this because the river is quite a distance away, and yet everything still looks very green, and the trees there are lovely.

Since it’s not an area you normally reach easily, the locals actually looked at us a little strangely. However, they were friendly and simply let us walk around. One of the things I liked best was a boat sitting in the middle of nowhere. It was a bit rusty and old—you could tell it had been there for quite some time—but even so, it looked like one of those ancient historical monuments that people explore and study.

Para llegar allá caminamos un montón y, por la hora y el clima de la zona, no fue tan fácil llegar porque nos cansamos mucho. Cuando llegamos nos dimos cuenta de que había muy pocas casas y estaban bastante separadas unas de las otras. Aun así, y esto es algo que me sorprende, esta zona, por más remota y calurosa que es, es bastante bonita. Y lo digo porque el río queda a una distancia considerable y aun así todo se ve bastante verde y los árboles que hay están bonitos.

Como no es una zona a la que normalmente se llega con facilidad, la verdad es que las personas del lugar nos vieron un poco raro. Sin embargo, fueron amables y simplemente nos dejaron caminar por ahí. Una de las cosas que más me gustó fue una embarcación que estaba en medio de la nada. Algo oxidada y vieja, se notaba que llevaba bastante tiempo ahí, pero aun así parecía uno de esos monumentos históricos antiguos que las personas exploran y estudian.

I have to say that we went to visit this place at this time of day because, since it was so far from where we were staying, the truth is that visiting it later made us a little nervous because it might get dark. Also, animals do come out in this area, especially since it’s not very crowded and there aren’t people around to scare them off. Two of the people with me weren’t afraid and went a little further, but I didn’t go any farther.

The farthest I went was to the boat that was there, and I was also a little scared to get on it because I didn’t know how old it was and I might fall off. Mainly, I have to admit that I was really scared that some animal—like a snake or something like that—might come out from inside the boat. Even so, it was nice and quite an experience. Looking at it from a few meters away, it seemed incredible to me.

One interesting thing about this place is that we knew it was called “El Rincón de Samariapo” because the locals told us so, but there wasn’t any kind of sign or anything like that with the name on it. In fact, this place doesn’t appear anywhere on the map, since it’s a name given to it by the people in the community. They told us there were many more houses further ahead, but to be honest, given the time of day and the heat, we decided to just go as far as that point and then turn back.

Debo decir que fuimos a esta hora a visitar este lugar porque, al ser tan distante de donde nos estábamos quedando, la verdad es que visitarlo más tarde nos daba algo de miedo porque podía oscurecer. Además, por esta zona sí salen animales, especialmente porque no es tan concurrida y no hay personas por ahí que de algún modo los espanten. Dos de los que iban conmigo no tuvieron miedo y llegaron un poco más lejos, pero yo no avancé más.

Lo más lejos que llegué fue a la embarcación que estaba allí y en ella también me dio algo de miedo montarme porque no sabía qué tan vieja estaba y podía caerme. Principalmente debo admitir que me asustaba mucho que saliera algún animal, como una serpiente o algo por el estilo, desde dentro de la embarcación. Aun así estuvo lindo y fue toda una experiencia. Mirarlo desde algunos metros de distancia me pareció que se veía increíble.

Algo interesante de este lugar es que sabíamos que se llamaba "El Rincón de Samariapo" porque las personas de la zona nos lo dijeron, pero no había ningún tipo de cartel o algo por el estilo que dijera el nombre. De hecho, este lugar no sale en ninguna parte del mapa, ya que es un nombre que le pusieron las personas de la comunidad. Nos dijeron que había muchas más casas más adelante, pero la verdad es que por la hora y por el calor decidimos solo llegar hasta ahí y luego devolvernos.
