MUSIC: Tribute to Artists We Lost in 2023 (ENG/ESP): PART 3 - Tina Turner!

Hello everybody on HIVE, and especially the Music Community. My name is Jasper and I'm writing to you from Cape Town in South Africa!

I hope you are having a wonderful start to 2024, and that it is going to be a good, productive year for you.

Looking back at 2023, quite a few famous songwriters and musicians passed away. I thought I would do a series of weekly posts about some of them, as well as attempt to cover one or two of the songs that made them so famous.

Here is a list of some of the musicians and songwriters that passed away in 2023, that I will be researching and trying to cover:

Let’s get cracking with Number 3 on my list: Tina Turner! I think unlike my first two tributes (Sixto Rodriguez and Robbie Robertson), I think there is a very high chance that you already know who Tina Turner was – she used to be refered to as the “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll”!

The basic story is that Tina Turner started out as a duo with her husband Ike Turner. They disbanded in the 1970s. Then, in the 1984, Tina Turner launched what is refered to as the “Greatest comeback in music history” with her first solo album “Private Dancer” going multi-platinum. That album included the fantastic “What’s Love Got to Do with It” – let’s enjoy that one here:

Tina Turner’s most famous single is probably “The Best”, and I think that is the one I’m going to try and tackle a cover of myself! Wish me luck! Here’s the original video:

Tina Turner has also starred in several movies – I remember watching her in “Mad Max – Beyond Thunderdome” as the ruler of the post-apocalyptic “Bartertown”. She sang on that movie’s “We Don’t Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)” as well as “GoldenEye” from the James Bond franchise of movies!

It would take me ages to mention Tina Turner’s achievements that include 12 grammies, lifetime acheivement awards, and two inductions into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame (her duo with Ike and her solo career). I think the one thing that sums up what a star she was is that she once held the record for the largest paying audience for a concert, at about 180 000 people! WOW!

She will be sorely missed! Next week, let me try and tackle a tribute to Sinead o’Connor! I hope to see you there!
