SKETCHBOOK PROCESS – From rough strokes to a sizzling brand identity 👨‍🍳⭕/ PROCESO EN EL CUADERNO – De trazo suelto a sello de arepería 🖌️⭕

Hey Hive artists! 👋🎨 Today I’m sharing my latest logo design project for an arepa business – and I want to walk you through the sketch-to-final journey because this one was all about gesture and contrast. ✏️🔥

The Central Figure
I started with quick, loose thumbnails until I locked this pose: a cook in mid-action, flipping an arepa on a cast-iron pan. 🥘 The body language is everything – tilted shoulder, dynamic arm, that instant of fire and flight. I wanted it to feel hand-drawn, not stiff or vector-perfect.

The Black Strokes – My favorite part ⚫
Instead of clean digital lines, I went for bold, calligraphic brush strokes with thick-thin variation – like ink on paper. This gives the logo a rough, artisan soul that matches the hand-made food. It also keeps that "sketchbook rawness" alive, even in the final version. ✍️

The Circle as a frame ⭕
I enclosed everything in a perfect circle – not just for branding, but because it echoes the arepa itself: round, whole, complete. It also works as a badge that fits beautifully on merch, signs, or avatars.

The Orange backdrop 🍊
Outside the circle, a solid burnt orange field creates instant warmth and high contrast. Orange = corn, sunset, grill heat. It makes the black ink pop aggressively – even on a small screen.

What I learned
This piece taught me that less is more when you have strong stroke weight and a limited palette. It reads fast, feels honest, and scales from a sketchbook page to a billboard. 📐💥
