My Close Encounters
Three of my encounters with wild animals. The first was with a wild boar. You can tell it’s young, but I couldn’t tell exactly how young it was or whether it was alone or with a group—I’m no expert.
The basic rule: don't run away. But before I began to carefully back away, I took a few photos.
My second encounter with fate, in the Polish Tatra Mountains. There was no danger at all. You could tell the fox was used to people—we’d been feeding it (never do this!!!)—and it came close but remained cautious.
And the third encounter—with a bison. That one was dangerous. We didn’t approach it; the bison approached us. Busy with our work and with our backs turned to it, we didn’t notice it coming
In the photo, you can see that his head is lowered; you can't tell that he was digging at the ground with his front paw. This is a clear warning—I don't like this, run away.We weren't trying to be heroes. We slowly backed away without turning our backs on the agitated bison.
