Slab on Grade Preparation , Inspections and Caring the structure after Casting #Construction Diary
Hello fellow builders in Hive. Im just sharing a video regarding a slab on grade that I inspected at our project site. This was taken yesterday, February 27, 2024. this is a housing project and I inspected a three storey townhouse unit.
Preparation and Inspection Needed
For slab-on-grade structures, first, you need to secure the soil stability and compaction. During the backfilling you need to compact the soil layer by layer. The maximum elevation is 30 cm, then compact and backfill again for another layer until the last layer. In the last layer, you need to conduct a Field Density Test (FDT) to verify the compaction of the soil. The acceptable percentage of soil compaction is 95% and above.
If the FDT passes, you can now move to the next activity, which is to apply a soil poisoning for termites and other pest control. Then, layer the subgrade. In this part, the subgrade should be five centimeters thick. It is advisable to use 3/4 to 1 inch diameter in size. After attaining the right elevation, you can start installing the rebar reinforcement. For the rebar, we use 10 mm diameter in size, and the spacing both sides should be 40 cm. The spacing and size of rebar depend on the structural design.
Make sure of the proper spacing and the proper concrete cover. It is important also to check this thing. The thickness of our Slab on grade is only 10 cm, this will be the structural finish in the ground floor. Always ensure that the elevation is from the survey team that monitors the exact data and elevation.
Another thing to check is the sanitary line and water line provisions. They should be in the exact location and free from defects. This is one of the things neglected during the preparation of the structure; be mindful of this one. Also, make sure all testing, like sanitary line leak test, flow test, and pressure test for this pipes are all conducted and passed already to avoid demolation during failures.
After checking and securing that the earth works, civil works, and electrical and Plumbing works are passed, you can now commence the concrete pouring of the slab on grade structure. On this part, you need to make sure that you order or mix the right strength of concrete and conduct the slump and flow test for the concrete before pouring to check the concrete quality.
Caring is Important
The next day, if the concrete has already hardened, pour water all over its surface for curing purposes to avoid cracks and make the concrete healthy. Do it for the span of seven Days. That's it. You already cast and care a slab on grade structure.
That's it for this blog. hoping I give you another Idea about construction. Thank you for joining me on this blog.
