التَّسامح في اللُّغة العربيّة وفي عُرف النَّاس هو الصَّفح والعفو والمسامحة ممّن يمتلك القُدرة على الانتقام وانتزاع الحقّ باليدّ من الأقل منه والذي تسبب له بالأذى أو الضرر وأقدره الله عليه، والإعلان الدَّوليّ للتسامح الصَّادر سنة 1995م عرَّفه بالنّص التَّالي:"إنّ التّسامح يعني الاحترام والقبول والتّقدير للتّنوع الثريّ لثقافات عالمنا ولأشكال التّعبير وللصِّفات الإنسانيّة لدينا. ويتعززّ هذا التسامح بالمعرفة والانفتاح والاتصال وحرية الفِكر والضمير والمُعتقَد. وأنَّه الوئام في سياق الاختلاف، وهو ليس واجبًا أخلاقيًّا فحسب، وإنما هو واجبٌ سياسيٌّ وقانونيٌّ أيضًا، والتَّسامح هو الفضيلة التي تُيسِّر قيام السَّلام، تُسهِ
