Animation Vs Visual Effects

There have always been two worlds that live very close to one another. That is the wold of animation and the world of visual effects. In fact we are living in such a world of hybrids now that maybe they should be viewed as different sides of the spectrum. It is important to think about color and message.

Animation seems to be more about breathing life into in animate objects and visual effects seems to be about the special magic dust that blends and brings created worlds together.

With this said... I am reminded of the two films... the first film I ever saw that was color effected by the early crews over at ILM was "Dreams". This film was truly a ground braking transformation of over colorized landscapes to give the film a dream like atmosphere. "Dreams" was crafted by Japanese film maker Akira Kurosawa.

And the second film that made me remember "Dreams" and is exactly how I thought they could push this technique even further was a film called "What Dreams May Come". It was as if we were watching a canvas of oil paint and images coming to life.

Dreams - 1990

What Deams May Come - 1998
