Getting Your Media Ready Before Editing in Kdenlive

Before placing clips on the timeline, it is worth spending a few minutes organizing and previewing your media. Kdenlive makes this process simple, allowing you to inspect your footage, set the parts you want to use, and keep the interface arranged in a way that speeds up editing.

Importing Your Media

The easiest way to add videos, images, and audio is by dragging them directly into the Project Bin on the left side of the interface. You can also use the Add Clip button or import files through the File menu, but dragging and dropping is usually the fastest approach.

Once imported, all of your media is stored in the Project Bin until you are ready to use it.

Preview Clips Before Editing

On the right side of the Project Bin is the Clip Monitor, which works much like the preview window found in other video editors. Selecting a clip lets you play it back, scrub through the footage, and decide which section you want to use without placing anything on the timeline.

This makes it easy to review large amounts of footage before beginning your edit.

View Clip Properties

Double clicking any clip in the Project Bin opens its properties. Here you can inspect important information such as the video's resolution, frame rate, duration, audio tracks, and other technical details.

Checking these properties early can help you avoid surprises later in your project, especially when working with footage from different cameras or sources.

Arrange the Workspace

One of Kdenlive's strengths is its flexible interface. The Project Bin, Effects, and Clip Properties panels can all be arranged together, allowing you to switch between them without constantly opening and closing windows.

A layout that keeps these panels visible at the same time makes editing much smoother, particularly on larger projects.

Set In and Out Points

Rather than dragging an entire clip onto the timeline, you can first preview it in the Clip Monitor and select only the section you need.

Move through the clip using the playback controls or by scrubbing the playhead. When you reach the beginning of the section you want, press I to set the In point. Move to the end of the desired section and press O to set the Out point.

Now, when you drag the clip onto the timeline, only the selected portion is added. This saves time and keeps your timeline cleaner from the start.
