Advice From Across The Pond

It's been a little more than a week since the UK's activist community took a serious punch to the gut. The Tories have a majority in Parliament and the path to Brexit is clear. Much like how activists in the United States had to accept a Trump Presidency, the activist community of the UK needs to get to work preparing for what is next.

A good start would to start thinking of how to build a movement that is multifaceted, but still interlocking. A sort of "shadow state" with services in and around affected communities may need to be built and maintained.

Minority communities will also find themselves under attack, both legislatively and physically. The US has seen an uptick in bias-related incidents since Trump's election and events like Charlottesville and Portland are examples of the danger newly empowered reactionaries pose. Here might be a way to build some all-important praxis. Training could be provided to members of targeted minority communities in both physical and electronic defense.

One other tool that still needs to be a part of the activist's toolkit is direct action. Many of the actions that were part of Extinction Rebellion could be applied to aspects of Brexit and the England that may follow.

England at has become part of the "Axis of Authoritarianism" joining; Russia, Turkey, Brazil, etc. It may now have to join the growing global resistance to authoritarian rule.
