New Countertops Finally! - March 17, 2021 @goldenoakfarm

On Wednesday I had the countertop installation scheduled (for the 3rd time since November), my carpenter was coming at 7AM, and my intern at 9AM. I was up early as usual and cleared the old plywood countertops off.

When the carpenter got there, he disconnected the plumbing, got the sink out and then took all the old countertops off. He had several things to do to the island before they could install the new countertop. The cabinets hadn’t been screwed together so he did that.

He had to install this support for the corner that didn’t have a cabinet under it. Then he had to put wooden supports in the front of the sink base so I could attach the towel holder to it.

Once that was done he made sure everything was level and flat for the install.

They did the little one this side of the stove first as it didn’t require anything done. We asked them to not glue it down as we have to get the stove out for refurbishing down the road.

This section came in 2 pieces which were glued together.

It’s amazing how well they can put them together. There’s no finding the seam.

The island was done last. I could not do anything with the counters for about 1½ hours after installation to allow the glue to set. Then the carpenter changed out the faucet for the one that was supposed to be there and then installed the sink. All the time muttering “I hate plumbing, I hate plumbing…” But he did his usual excellent job none the less.

Once it was finished, he left and my intern and I sat and finally finished the tins puzzle. It was a cold but sunny day. My back was still bothering me all day.

Wednesday the carpenter plans to finish the mudding in the bathroom. He has some small pieces of sheetrock to put up in the hall and clean room. Once that’s done he will probably do more mudding in those areas.

My husband and I had a homestead farm in Western Massachusetts with beef cattle, pigs, meat birds, and layers along with large vegetable gardens and an herb garden until he died on Christmas 2020. I only have the gardens now but no longer have animals except my old cat, Larry.
