My Fear

What am I afraid of?

I believe, like most people, I am afraid of many things. Some fears are more spiritual and innate to human nature, while others are specific phobias or anxieties. Today, I am going to write about my fear of heights.

For the past ten years of my life, I have been afraid of heights. Every time I find myself in a situation where I am on a second-floor height or higher and have to look down, a strange feeling overcomes me. I start to fear that this is the end, that I will fall and die instantly. I also experience a sense of dizziness throughout my body. These feelings are not limited to just buildings or balconies; they sometimes occur when I drive in the mountains and the road is on a cliff.

When did it first happen?

After a tragic event in my life, where I began to feel somewhat depressed, I started noticing this fear. At first, it was relatively mild, but after about a year, I climbed a castle in Serbia, and that's when I instantly felt that familiar feeling. Initially, I didn't understand what it was since it was the first time it happened. However, after that experience, this fear started to hold me back and put a strain on my life.

I distinctly remember one incident when I had to cross a high-speed road on a bridge. I thought I would try to face my fear, but as soon as I got up there, my heart started racing uncontrollably, my feet froze, and all I could think was that I had to leave immediately or I would die.

Since that incident, I haven't had a fear attack like that again. I would love to try to overcome this fear, but I believe that the best way to do so is to confront it head-on, even though it is also quite scary.
